Meet Bill Dwight

Four years ago I was honored to be elected to serve the entire City of Northampton as an at-Large Councilor. My colleagues on the Council amplified that honor by unanimously electing me to serve as their Council President at our very first meeting.

Since that time, the City has adopted a new updated Charter that more clearly defines the separation of powers and now requires the Council to preside over its own meetings and affairs. The Mayor no longer runs Council Meetings. The Council President does. The result has been improved lines of accountability and expanded public access.

I’m 60 years old. I served on the Council for eight years as the Councilor for Ward 1 back in 1996. I stepped down in 2004 to try out community broadcasting on WHMP and Valley Free Radio. Doing a radio show was exciting and stimulating and it almost satisfied my public service impulses. But, nothing ever compared with my work as a City Councilor. That has been (and still is) the most fulfilling job I have ever had.

I was born and raised in the Valley. My family has been here for generations. I honestly wouldn’t live anywhere else.

My wife, Lida Lewis, teaches English at Holyoke Community College and my son, Eli, is a sustainable builder in the San Francisco Bay area.

Thank you for your interest in my re-election. I hope that you you’ll consider me for one of your two votes for Councilor at Large this coming November 3rd.
